For those that didn't...

Well, if you didn't get one of these, here are a couple of pictures to show you what you are missing...Been awhile since I have had a White Christmas here, now I am just TIRED of shoveling snow...

Is it that time already?

Wow, I know completely slacking over here.

First off, Merry Christmas to all my blog readers, especially those who have kept checking back hoping for a new post.I have been real busy lately working and have lost the free time that I once had to pound away at this lonely keyboard and send such interesting tidbits everyone's way. I can't promise things will get much better in the immediate future, but once I get this computer network upgrade finished I do hope to have some additional spare time to get back to blogging.

What? You don't believe work is the only thing that has kept me busy? But you know I am a workaholic, right? Alright, alright I give... While out stargazing one night last fall a particularly interesting woman stumbled into my life. So while I was out searching the dark night sky for shooting stars I never imagined that I would meet a lovely lady. Four months later, she has managed to survive my mood swings, my busy schedules, my late working hours, random departures to play fireman and my cooking; so when I haven't been slaving away at work, re-certificating my medical skills, saving damsels from flaming houses (Okay so maybe not quite that heroic), upgrading computers and network architecture, I have been enjoying her company and getting to know more about her and her family.

So there you have it, a quick update and a few tidbits on what has been happening in my life... Hope the Holiday Season finds you all well, may you and your company's travels be safe and wish you all a Happy New... Awh, wait I still have a week to get that done...

Well...

Well, there you have it folks, America is FOR SALE to the highest bidder. Now maybe we will find out the hard way who exactly supported his campaign and will start to appreciate just exactly what this will mean to our fine country...

-----Edit-----
Obama raked in 62,534,907 votes (52%)
McCain held onto 55,456,309 votes (46%)

Good job Obama President Elect, now lets see if you can unite this country and guide us.

Today

Get out and VOTE!!! Today is the day that you secure your right to complain about the President's Actions for the next four years; complaining will not be tolerated if you didn't cast your ballot...

Prepare for the change to socialism, unless of course the pollsters are wrong...

On Hot Dates and Sharing Showers

My weekend started out with a hot date.
Bright and early Saturday morning I awoke to my pager rattling around and was greeted by a nice female voice telling me I was needed. We were requested to provide Mutual Aid to a fire department three districts away that was actively fighting a structure fire that involved three buildings. I knew it had to be bad, since we had at least a 40 minute response time to the address. I wasn't able to take any pictures when we arrived on scene since there was a lot of work to be done.
The long story short, we saved the attached garage of the one house. After the work was done I got this picture of our structure engine nosed into the driveway. After a cold decontamination shower with the guys (definitely not the kind of shower most of us think a hot date should end with), we were quickly back in service and heading home.
Along the way, the sunrise was a welcoming sight and a beautiful reminder that the day had already begun and sleep was suddenly a luxury. Enjoying a sunrise with a stout cup of coffee and a high calorie breakfast burrito all mixed with the aroma of dirty gear, made me forget the cold water down the back of my neck during decon. Of course, the bragging rights during training this week when the fire house still smells of smoke and my gear still wears the grime of the morning will be enjoyed.

Sunday found me sleeping in till the early afternoon hours and than just taking it easy all day long. Ended the fine weekend with some quality time and a little pumpkin carving. Have you ever wondered how many pumpkins get carved up and throw away? How many pumpkin pies are aborted because of this tradition? Even if I have to say so myself, I thought mine turned out quite well...

My Weekend

Well, a change of plans left me with a free weekend; so what better thing to do than head for the hills to enjoy the great outdoors. I thought I should share a couple of pictures from the weekend.

We had a great time on our little hike and got to see this little furry friend as he rushed back home with his nutritious treasure.
Here are a couple of unlikely friends that we spotted from the road...
An old building up at Fort Logan, now just a wide spot in the road missing the hustle and bustle of a true Fort.
As the day turned into night, someone painted this lovely picture...
Hope you enjoyed the highlights of our weekend, and had a few of your own...

For all you skeptics out there..

Read this

Now I myself want to know, where has all this money come from? Who are the silent economic backers? What do they have to gain by him being elected?

I think the American people need to be very careful this year when voting...something seems very fishy and we should be demanding to know who is footing this bill and why they are so eager to part with all that money.

Electing Obama will mean the American public is For Sale to the highest bidder...

Time for some??

Yeap, pretty much sums it all up; the lie, cheat and steal their way to the big white house on top of the hill and We the People have no authority to hold them to their campaign promises...

Stocks plunge anew as retail sales show steep drop

By TIM PARADIS • AP Business Writer • October 15, 2008

NEW YORK — Angst over the economy is sending stocks plunging once again. A disappointing retail sales report has investors convinced that the banking crisis has caused cracks in the economy well beyond the financial sector and that a recession, if not already here, is inevitable.

The Dow Jones industrials are down more than 500 points, more than half their huge 936-point advance from Monday, and all the major indexes are down at least 5 percent.

The government’s report that retail sales plunged in September by 1.2 percent — almost double the 0.7 percent drop analysts expected — made it clear that consumers are reluctant to spend amid a shaky economy and a punishing stock market. And the economy cannot grow unless consumers are spending.

Now I know this is nothing new at all and most of us are aware of what our 401k's are doing these days, but I have this grand illusion that the business sector is comprised of individuals who are smarter than me so I found some humor in this article.

"...made it clear that consumers are reluctant to spend amid a shaky economy and a punishing stock market. And the economy cannot grow unless consumers are spending."

Maybe this just seems too easy, but don't the consumers need money in order to spend it? Unemployment is up, wages are stagnant, credit is frozen.... You see where I am going with this? Wasn't this HUGE tax payer burden that was just passed supposed to free up the basket of credit so businesses could grow, so employees could have job security, so the little guys and gals have money to spend to lubricate the economy train that just flattened our life savings?

I hate to say this Tim but it will take more than congressional smoke and mirrors in order for the consumers to blindly spend what liquid assets we have left to keep this 401k pillaging beast rolling; maybe some of these CEOs and Business executives can go out and spend their fat cash, because I know my nest egg makes Ethiopian Children look plump...

Note: Yes I know everyone has lost money and dollar to dollar the CEOs might have lost more, but when you are making three more digits a year than the average American, I really don't think the average American can empathize with you having to sell a home or get rid of your luxury car.

Legs of Stars

Now I know some of you are a little P-Turbed over visiting my blog only to see posts political in nature; well get over yourselves it is October. No I am not a card carrying Republican that is just banging the drum blindly (In Fact my ballot, which is already inked, has a nice mix of both parties), but a voter who really tries to make an informed decision which is more than can be said for about 80% of the population.

With the election weeks away the politicians have turned to negative campaign adds, unless of course you are Obama and you just have a satellite TV channel that is spewing your lies and deception 24 hours a day (Have you ever wondered where the money came from to pay for that, and why he thinks he needs to buy that much attention of the population?); but they are not without help in their negativism. Have you seen this picture?Wow, Sarah nice legs but isn't this picture sexist? I can not quite tell how I should react to this picture, should I drool or should I be offended? Why did they chose to frame a guy between them? Why not a baby? Why not a lady? The picture is not without artistic talent, but come on now she is the Governess of Alaska! I am just amazed that she can stand in those shoes, you go girl!

Lets see, the next order of the agenda is....Star parties! Yeah, I know some of you have already stopped reading but that is your loss and not mine! On the 21st the Orionid will peak so bundle up warm, grab a star chart and a red flashlight, find a dark place and spend some quality time with someone that you love looking for chunks of burning space debris. Oh look, someone raised their hand in the peanut gallery; Good point, the Orionid shower is not favorable viewing this year do to moon phases...Blah, blah, blah.
Note: Spending the time with your eyes closed looking for burning love will result in seeing stars, but not the celestial variety; so come up for air and look skyward every now and again.

The blog author is not responsible for the consequences of laying outside in the cold watching for shooting stars which might include but no way limited to: Frostbite, spider bites, lose of productivity, pregnancy, cold noses, cold hands migrated to warm places, inability to stay awake the next day, leaking sinuses, sickness and meeting new people.

Post-Script: Yes this does mean there is a high probability that I will be spending some nights outside capturing the celestial events while fighting off jack frost, but at least I won't be alone...

Lighter side..

For those that know me already know that I am VERY prone to this kind of behavior; in fact I am known for saying things before thinking about what I am really saying. EXCEPT, I don't always catch myself in mid sentence; I usually wait till it has completely rolled off my tongue before proceeding to place a foot in my mouth. Enjoy a little humor on me...

Are we Democratic?

"Polling shows Obama approaching the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory..."

Whoa, Whoa, WHOA! I thought we lived in a democratic society that operates on the Principles of Capitalism? So even now before the people get to vote the media and the electoral college have already decided the next President of the United States of America? Does this mean the Elections next month are rigged? The whole voting process a sham, hope you feel warm and fuzzy about yourself, process that means absolutely FRICKIN' nothing?

What is the good ol' USA becoming? The g-man has voted to allow government ownership and control of banking, and we the people nod and smile and say thank you for stabilizing our economy?

From where I sit, it appears like we are headed for a Socialistic Dictatorship; which one of our rights will be trampled on next?

so·cial·ism [soh-shuh-liz-uhm] Pronunciation Key –noun

dic·ta·tor·ship [dik-tey-ter-ship, dik-tey-] Pronunciation Key –noun
1.a country, government, or the form of government in which absolute power is exercised by a dictator.
2.absolute, imperious, or overbearing power or control.
3.the office or position held by a dictator.

Does this look familiar?

Where in history have we seen this type of behavior before?

Pork!

Do you know what it costs to buy votes in the house? Check this out...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are also some four dozen small provisions. Among them, with projected costs over 10 years:

_Extending an expired provision that gives Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands a rebate against excise taxes charged on imported rum. The rebate, at $13.50 per proof gallon, helps finance local infrastructure projects. The cost is $192 million.

_Establishing a new tax credit ranging from $2,500 to $7,500 for purchasers of plug-in electric-drive vehicles. Cost: $758 million.

_Extending tax credits that expired at the end of 2007 for certain domestic corporations involved in American Samoa economic development. Cost: $33 million.

_Extending a credit of up to $10,000 for the training of mine rescue team members. The credit expires at the end of this year and the one-year extension costs $4 million.

_Enacting President Bush's proposal to erase the debt of the black lung disability trust fund at a cost of $1.3 billion.

_Extending for one year a seven-year depreciation timetable that NASCAR and other motorsport racing facilities have had for some years, the same tax break that amusement parks enjoy. Without the extension, the tracks would have to depreciate the cost of their improvements over 15 years, raising their taxes by $100 million.

_Extending for five years a program that reduces import duties on some wool fabrics. The tariff relief benefits U.S. worsted wool fabric producers that use imported fibers and yarns. Cost: $148 million.

_Increasing the single-year deduction in production costs, from $15 million to $20 million, that film and TV productions may take if the costs are incurred in economically depressed areas. In an effort to keep film and TV productions in the U.S., it also allows more companies to use a domestic production deduction. Cost: $478 million.

_Allowing commercial fishermen and others hurt by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska to average out damage awards over three years rather than taking a one-year hit from the IRS. Cost: $49 million.

_Extending two programs that fund rural schools and rural communities that have been relying on declining income from logging on federal land or have low property tax bases because they are located on or next to federal lands. This is a major issue in the West. Cost: $3.3 billion.

_Exempting wooden practice arrows used by children from an excise tax of 39 cents per arrow. Oregon's two senators and two Wisconsin representatives previously introduced legislation calling for the action, saying the tax was meant for more expensive archery arrows and is untenable for makers of toy arrows that may cost only about 30 cents apiece. The bill would affect about a half-dozen manufacturers nationwide, including one in Oregon; the Oregon senators said they didn't seek its addition to the bailout, however. Cost: $2 million.

_Allowing employers to exempt from taxation what they spend on some fringe benefits for workers who commute to work by bicycle, for example reimbursing the cost of parking the bikes. Cost: $2 million.

of time wasted right here!

As they say, you can waste all your money and with dedicated effort, earn it all and than some back, but time that is wasted is lost forever! Hopefully all that time wasn't completely wasted.

How dumb do they think we are?

Capitalism has screwed the American People once again because of greed! Don't you just love how CEOs make millions of dollars and now that their decisions have drastically failed their companies, we the tax payers are going to get saddled with their bad decisions.
Whether it be the select democrats that decided to not allow the US to buy oil directly from IRAQ at a reduced price; so Iraq sold the stockpiled oil that was set aside to China at full price and made a killing on the oil. Which explains the HUGE budget surplus in a country we are spending billions of dollars trying to stabilize.
Or maybe the lets create local jobs but giving housing loans to high risk applicants at rates they never can afford to repay to stimulate the economy. Do they think that suddenly these people will be able to afford to pay for a house that is two to three times more than they can afford if they are fiscally responsible?
Maybe it is the fact that politicians have sold their souls to giant cooperations so they can get elected and than look the other way when big money fleeces the American Taxpayers.
Or maybe we are all responsible for taking what is handed to us and thinking that we not only deserve it, but feeling that we deserve even more. The only free lunch is the one that you grew in your garden.
When will this stop? When McCain gets elected? When Obama becomes the president who couldn't make a decision to save his life? This stops when the American people say ENOUGH!!!

Call for help!!!

Alright readers, I need your help. I made a goal that I would have my blog read by someone in all fifty states by the end of the year and so far I have done quite well, and we are just wrapping up the third quarter. As you can see on the map below there are still five states where I have yet to get a hit. Here is my challenge to you; if you know someone in any of the white states (well anyone for that matter who might enjoy reading) send them an e-mail with a link to my blog. Even if they only read it once, that is okay.
Check back in a couple of days to see my third quarter visitor statistics. Thanks to all my faithful followers that have made my blogging experience enjoyable...

I have also added the follower widget, so feel free to add yourself as a follower of my blog. It is nice to know my frequent visitors...

Short Fuses

I was just reading the comments on my last rant and realized that some of them are very true; that experience was a perfect time to show composure under fire. I guess I let my own abilities get me all whriled up, just because I check the custom install opitions when I install software, just because I have learned so well how to recovered data from compromised drives, all because I know exactly how many years I have been doing what I do and never once thought that a perfect stranger has no ability to look at my resume of experience.

The flip side of the story is that I did get the drive replaced (but the new one has its own problems) and feel whole again with my usb mass storage device back in operation. Did I learn a lesson, maybe but I am sure I will probably make the same mistake but at least in the future I will have a 'template' on how I should react instead of just venturing on into uncharted territory.

The Rest of the Story...

Yes I know I have been shirking my duties as a blogger, but I have good reason; I have been preoccupied in other areas of my life that have not had much excitement in quite awhile.

Now as P H would say, "Now for the rest of the story." No Cherice I didn't get married, but my best friend from college did. She married a really quiet man, and I think I might have gotten three complete sentences out of him the entire weekend. I did manage to extract a lot of shoulder shrugs and facial expressions, but very little verbal communication.
For most of the weekend I was the Bride's Servant, which of course explains the picture of my pink 'neck tie'. Oh wait, nah actually that doesn't explain the story. She has a great sense of humor and on one of my many errands I thought, you know what would be funny, I should wear a dog collar and leash the day of the wedding. Two errands later I was right next door to a Petco and I walked out a proud new owner of a pink collar and leash.
I wish I had a video camera of her face going from frustrated to a glowing smile when she saw the dog collar. That alone was worth it, being the Bride's Servant and Jester for the day wasn't all that bad. Yeah, I was tired but I had fun taking care of things so she could focus on her day and not be stressed out about the little things.
All in all the trip was a great success and it was fun to visit with Family and Friends; I just wish I had more time to visit with friends along the way, rather than buzz by under their radar.

Stupid People

We all have them, those little pet peeves that just IRRITATE us to the point where we just want to physically hurt someone. For me one of these peeves are call center employees who treat you like you are a complete idiot who barely knows how to unpack an electronic device let alone operate one. I am sure there are plenty of people who call in with a problem and the only thing wrong is they don't have power to the computer, but really if the person you are talking to knows the lingo and the steps on the trouble shooting flow chart you are reading to them, don't you think they might know something? Who do they really think developed the step by step trouble shooting guide? It might just have been an IT Field Technician who has experienced problems before and know what to check and to tweak to make things work.

Recently I had a brand new USB Flash Drive fail, which shocked me because I have NEVER failed one in my life. Yeah, I have recovered data off of smashed devices, I have dried devices out, I have even used a device for years that has no exterior skin. I know I am not a full time IT Guru who spends hours fixing problems after problems on computers, but I do know a thing or two about computers and non-functioning hot-swap devices. I found it truly amazing when the person on the other end of the phone told me to verify with my network administrator that I had the rights to use USB drives. Now maybe it was highly rude of me to say, "Hang on let me ask...Hey, Carl did you give yourself the rights to access USB drives? Are you sure? Cause this lady thinks that might be why my, or your, USB Flash Drive quit working. Ok, I will tell her that Fred said Carl is too stupid and irresponsible to have any rights..."

All in all, I do like the products the company makes and will probably continue to use them, but their Technical Support is like standing at the customer service counter at OfficeMAX. And yes, the manager there hates me for my response to the question, "Well did you try it in another computer?"

Top Ten Reasons..

Well, to answer a honest question on my blog I have created a top ten list...

Top Ten Reasons to have Multiple Memory Cards...

10. To much of a good thing is never too much

9. I am used to changing my film every 24 exposures

8. Pelican makes a cool memory case

7. My Momma told me to never carry all my eggs in one basket.

6. I don't trust Microsoft.

5. 1 GB cards are cheaper

4. I have been known to fill up several cards a week.

3. I know how long it takes to recover a corrupted 1 GB Card.

2. Flash Memory cards can and will get corrupted.

And the #1 reason you want multiple memory cards for your camera...

Because you never know when you will get the dreaded message "memory card full." Be prepared, carry a spare!!!

Thursday, August 28, 2008

I just HAVE to brag!

Last week I found an AWESOME hard case for memory cards and I just can't keep it too myself, so listen up all you digital camera gurus. Pelican has made a series of new cases that are specific to memory cards and has rubber inserts to secure specific cards in the case (currently available for SD/MiniSD, xD, Compact Flash & Memory Stik).
I am a proud owner of several Pelican cases and was giddy with anticipation as I paid for my treasure that I found and could not wait to fill it up with my SD cards and to dispose of all those little plastic cases that the cards come in (if anyone wants one I will gladly mail you one, since now they are just taking up residence in the junk/battery drawer).

Pelican's costumer service is extremely helpful and I have yet to have a problem with them standing behind any of their products. No I haven't had any defective products nor have I ever damaged any gear that was safely stored in a Pelican, but have dealt with them on several occasions when trying to get the right size case for a specific application and they were extremely helpful. It is a good thing I don't have kids, because I would be requesting a special case to protect my kidlettes when they are out getting their adrenaline rushes.

Take my advice; if you spend serious money on it, would find it difficult to live without it, or just in general want to protect something...Store it in a Pelican you will not be disappointed!

Note: Pelican did not pay me for this review and is based specifically on my experience with their products and my recommendations do not guarantee their performance for your application.

Monday already?

Yawn! Well, it is most definitely a Monday! I finally had a 'me' weekend and enjoyed every minute of just relaxing and doing the things that I have wanted to do for awhile. Mostly was the much needed break before I start back into studying for my license exams in a couple of months, so looking forward to getting those behind me.

I will try to get pictures posted of my weekend later on but here is a quick run down... Friday afternoon/evening was filled with yard work and a little stargazing outback. Saturday was sleep in (duh I was up late staring at the stars), worked on making a new camera mount for the telescope, compiling CD archives of pictures, visiting with Lil M, more stargazing with an undertone of photo experimentation. Sunday was another late start, lunch with the rents & Lil M, quick visit to Ryan Dam, Baseball game and a relaxing evening. Needless to say, I am completely drained and wiped out this morning, but 'I owe, I owe, so it is off to work I go...'

What a week...

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

Not sure how y'all are doing, but this one REALLY improved my 'personality'. Kind of a mid-week course correction, something that we all can use every now and again...

Awhhh!!!

Yeah, I know you all have been waiting for some more of these, and no they are not pictures of me with the Misses...
Another late night and I was amazed at all that I could see in the non-dark sky behind my house. Jupiter was out real early and joined shortly there after by Cassiopeia. I was able to get a snap shot of Jupiter and three of its moon, but the camera/telescope mount was not real steady and I don't have any tracking equipment on the scope. Yes, donations will be excepted for telescope upgrades that will enable much better pictures of distant objects; send them to Thrasher's Observatory Fund...

No new pictures of any constellations, but I am actively trying to capture a couple more to share, but did get a few of the full moon rising. The answer to the previous constellation question is Pegasus, look for the giant square of Pegasus and the rest of the constellation just materializes... Well, maybe only if you are on the right medications.
Here is a picture of the full moon, for those who have been waiting patiently to see the moon in all it's glory. And yes it appears to be blue, but it is not really a blue moon; just a little blue from the filter used.I was even able to zoom in a little more on th surface of the moon...makes me wonder what it was like to fly past in a Lunar orbit during the Apollo missions...

More bad pictures...

The best thing about bad pictures is that sometimes things can be salvaged. Got another roll of film back and the pictures were not that great, but a few were salvagable.
This is the image as captured on film and developed. Not that great but you can still see Cassiopea.

A little digital processing and some magic and we can arrive at this image, even the noise in the picture can be amplified to look like a star.

More digital processing and negating all the hot spots on the film give this, notice how some of the fainter stars disappear.

Just a couple of other night pictures that show the NE horizonline.

You did what to my film?

So, the lovely photo developer ( I will refrain from calling them other names that come to mind) at Target ruined my film from the other night, which I find highly irritating especially after warning the person working at the developing center that the film was night-time pictures and would need to be developed accordingly. Yes, ruined was the one picture that actually contained a meteor, ruined was the picture centered around Polaris, ruined was almost an entire roll of pictures. Now for those who are doubting my photography skills, it wasn't me... ; P
But alas, with a little luck and skill, I was able to extract one good picture of a familiar constellation (well at least in the northern hemisphere).
And just so people don't think I am just uploading black pictures to my blog...
Yes, you really should click on the black squares, there really are visible entities in the pictures.

I still have no takers on the constellation in the previous post...
